Blog No. 35 of 2025
Goodbye August! I know two days still remain in the month but the next blog you get from me will be in September. That means we’re THIS much closer to fall. This summer has been brutal and so hot I have found myself only wanting to be in the AC. I’ve hardly gone to the beach and that’s very strange for me, a lover of the ocean!
I will say though, I LOVE the slower pace of summer but I’m definitely not loving the traffic those three mornings I drive Nick to his program but the fact I get to just go straight home and relax makes it much more bearable.
What I also loved was this past weekend when I went on a date night with Vance to Batubellin which was ok, it was kind of meh. I think we both like the outdoor patio next door with it’s cozy ambiance, friendly staff and delicious cocktails better.
Christina, me and Travis at Health in the Hood event in Opa-Locka.
Saturday was a muggy, rainy, dreary day and I spent it loading my car with boxes of food with lots of help from a fellow Food Rescuer and transporting it from Whole Foods to Opa-locka for the Health in the Hood Fair. There, Food Rescue US South FL (us!) and volunteers/partners from Junior League of Miami gave out bags of food to the needy under dark skies, on and off rain and muggy, muggy conditions.
Although I was pretty wiped (thank goodness for that little afternoon nap I took), I was happy to go hang out with our friends The Wutzlers who had a send off barbecue for their son Jake who heads off to Germany to complete his Master’s Degree.
The gang at Bird Bowl. L-R, Susy, Nick, me, Vance, Elena, AJ & Jojo.
Me, bowling a strike!
Sunday, Nicholas finally got his long time wish, to go bowling with my sister Susy, who brought along daughter Elena, AJ and Jojo. It was a fun afternoon at Bird Bowl followed by of course, a little stop at Dos Croquetas. Those three croquetas were my dinner!
Wednesday morning, I made a very cool discovery about Manley’s Jewelry in North Miami. I’ve been going to them for years for small jewelry and watch repairs and I got to talking to the owner and he told me they’ve been in business since 1949. They moved from their first location in Allapattah to North Miami in the 1960s and have been at their current location since 1995. I noticed their business cards say “Railroad Watch Inspector” so I inquired about that and the owner told me his father was an official inspector of railroad operator’s pocket watches back in the day.
Also, I realized I always only share my articles from Artburst Miami and Biscayne Times, so here’s a fresh one I did for South Florida on the Cheap. Click here to read about the public art at of all places, Aventura Mall.
That’s all for this week and below you’ll find some cool stuff to check out this weekend.
