Blog No. 38 of 2025
Spent a quiet weekend at home, loving that the UM Hurricanes won on Saturday and sorry the Florida Gators lost and finding myself in heart attack-inducing mode once again while watching another Miami Dolphins loss on Sunday. And I’ll admit, throughout the entire game, I found myself yelling at the television.
That was the weekend’s excitement, that was it.
Peacocks hanging out on a front yard in Biscayne Park. They eventually began trotting down the sidewalk, walking in step with me as I made my way down one of my favorite tree-lined streets. It’s like they were keeping me company.
A gorgeous, massive tree off 32 St. and Biscayne Blvd. I admired it while enjoying my current read “Avid Reader” a memoir by book publisher Robert Gottlieb.
Monday and Wednesday I went on a nice long walk through Biscayne Park, one of my absolute favorite things to do. The birds were quite vocal those two days and I also spotted a few peacocks. After the Wednesday walk, I decided to rip off the Band-Aid and begin printing out the short essays I’ve written about different memorable events in my life. I’m entertaining the idea of self-publishing them. I’ve still got quite a few to get through on my list but it was a good first step.
Yesterday was a really good day. It’s when after a nine-hour Miami-Dade County Commission Meeting I read an article this morning that they’d restored full funding to the arts in Miami-Dade County. This affects me because I get paid for my Artburst Miami work through those funds. It also keeps our arts groups alive so they can continue their work. But this is just a temporary solution and I, and many in the arts community and other essential non-profits fear, we will all be back next year pleading our case once again.
And last night too, the Miami Dolphins put up a sort of decent fight against the Buffalo Bills but alas no, it wasn’t to be. ANOTHER loss. That’s 0-3 for them, winless, yet again.
On another note, I’m planning to perhaps return to the Miami New Times as a freelancer. Yesterday I e-mailed their Culture Editor and she’s open to me sending her story pitches which is quite encouraging. I may also take my work with Food Rescue a bit further and become their volunteer coordinator. We’ll see what happens with all of that. So much for slowing down, something I always say I’m going to do and always end up doing the opposite.
That’s it for this week. Nick and I are hitting the road today, heading up to Merritt Island for a weekend with Vance and having dinner with Elizabeth somewhere in Orlando tonight. I’m really looking forward to that and to tomorrow when Vance, Nick and I are going to see “School of Rock” at the Cocoa Village Playhouse.
Here are some parting images from this week. One in honor of my Mom, whose 102nd birthday would’ve been Sept. 16 and of a passage in the book “Avid Reader” that really stuck with me.
Oh, and because I’m finally remembering to mention this, I encourage you to follow my cousin Jorge Garcia-Meitin on Facebook. He is an amazing artist and has had his work displayed at various museums in Washington DC and is one of the most productive artists I know. His work is beautiful.
A junior Frosty I had on Wednesday in honor of my Mom. Those and Jr. Bacon Cheeseburgers from Wendy’s were her favorite.
My crazy husband Vance up on a mobile crane at Port Canaveral, just another day on the job for him.
The passage I mentioned above, the quote that begins “Oh no, Cynthia…” where she finishes with “It lacked one thing: The element of greatness.” Such crushing words, they cut right through the heart and something no writer ever wants to hear.
A gorgeous sunset capture while standing at my front door.
And if you’re a Miami Herald subscriber, here’s a link to the upcoming Theater season in South Florida, I contributed to this roundup, helping my Editor Michelle Solomon compile the list. Click here to read it.
Until next Friday, have a good weekend.
