Busy and fun week

It indeed was a busy and fun week, starting with dinner on Saturday night with friends Kevin and Michelle and Rick and Adina. We dined at Phuc Yea in the MiMo District. We ordered a ton of food and shared everything… edamame hummus, broccoli bao buns, green papaya salad, char siu roasted black cod (one of my faves of the night), smoked short rib, roasted cornish hen, watermelon salad and the five spice carrot cake for dessert. After, we went to The New Schnitzel House where we enjoyed after dinner cocktails at the bar. I recommend TNSH for Happy Hour when they’ve got great appetizer and drink specials. This place has been there forever but it’s been revamped and reimagined by the new owner Adam Gerstein who also owns Gramps in Wynwood.

Sunday I attended the beautiful Palm Sunday service at my parish, St. Martha’s Catholic Church in Miami Shores. It was a beautiful service. Then I rushed home to work on the food for my catering event. I again catered a small reception for Karen Peterson Dancers after their conference and talk. It was held at the Koubek Center in Little Havana, just like last year. Again, it was delightful and so pleasing to see how much they enjoyed the food. Check out the spread in the pictures above.

Pieces in the Ray Rolston show, depicting life in Key West. The frames are made from old lobster traps. The show is up through June 7.

Monday I went to the Historic Ward Rooming House in Overtown to view the current exhibition “Conch House Hues: The Art of Ray Rolston” and interview the show’s curator Chris Norwood of Hampton Art Lovers. I got to see Rolston’s amazing body of work and also speak to his daughter and find out about his passion for art and life in Key West. I’m writing an article on the show and the artist for Biscayne Times.

Me and George (not the best picture of me but oh well, I have no shame)

Tuesday was a day to play and have fun. First I met George Neary for breakfast at our usual spot, Tinta y Cafe in Miami Shores then I headed to Collins Ave. and 53 St. for a day at the beach with the girls — Ita, Michelle and Teri. We spent the day catching up, eating snacks and enjoying the ocean breeze. Getting a little sunburned too! It was a lovely, restful day.

The script by Ruben Diaz. When Vance saw I’d been cast to read the part of an introvert, he burst out laughing!

Then that night, I walked over to The Katz, just blocks from my house, to participate in the cold reading workshop Naked Angels Miami. I got cast to read a part in my friend Ruben’s script in development and it was a blast! I also heard some fantastic spoken word by Keldrick Mobley and Benjamin the Brain and listened to the sweet voices of singers Breeze DTA and the soulful sounds of Paul Morris. Morris sweet, chill voice gave me chills. They are all such talented individuals. So glad this is back!

Nick with the basketball he won shooting hoops at the Fair standing next to the Recycle Trash Monster who is always a fixture in the exhibition hall at the Fair.

Wednesday was another kinda cheat day. After doing food rescue at Trader Joe’s and getting home to do some work, I rushed to pick up Nick and his girlfriend Ashley and we spent the afternoon into the evening at the Youth Fair. They had a great time riding rides, watching some of the shows (the new Stormtrooper one was pretty cool) and going to the petting zoo and enjoying the student exhibits. The food was good too!

Yesterday, after a busy day conducting interviews for upcoming articles, I attended the Holy Thursday mass at St. Martha’s where I had the honor of being the first lector. It was another truly beautiful service. And I returned there today on this Good Friday, to participate in the Stations of the Cross service.

For those who celebrate, I wish you a wonderful Easter Sunday celebrating that glorious day.

And… if by any chance you find yourself in the Pinecrest area tomorrow and are hungry for lunch or dinner, head to Bolay Kitchen, the flyer I’ve included above provides the details for the Best Buddies fundraiser for the upcoming Friendship Walk on April 6.

Until next Friday, have a wonderful weekend and week!
