Sorta springy
Spring has pretty much arrived in Miami and I’m happy about that and welcoming the rain which we had plenty of on Saturday and Sunday. I love the way the yard looks when everything starts “springing” back to life. But I will say as the week progressed it got very warm.
And no day was there more rain than on Saturday, right in the middle of our outdoor Food Rescue South FL Farmer’s Market at Theodore Gibson Park in Overtown. We got soaked! But, we gave out lots of fresh food to people in need and had a good time regardless of the drenching conditions.
Nick all tuxed up, ready for the Friendship Ball.
Then that night, after dropping Nick off at his Best Buddies Friendship Ball at Milander Park’s Milander Center for Arts & Entertainment in Hialeah Vance and I had dinner at El Morro Castle right nearby. The decor is nothing special, it’s a very simple and small place but the pollo a la plancha and congri I had and the rice and beans Vance had (also with pollo a la plancha) and the tres leches we split for dessert were all very good.
Sunday, before Vance headed back up to Merritt Island, he and I took a nice long walk through Biscayne Park under post-rain blue skies, with a lovely breeze.
Oleta Park trail
Oleta River view
Wednesday morning, I went to Oleta River State Park in North Miami Beach and enjoyed a great walk through their nature/bike trails, stopping to take some photos along the way and admire the beautiful views. I encountered one mountain biker a couple of times, the mountain bike trails are what they’re known for there. I walked by their cabins where I spotted a few campers and also met a nice couple visiting from Minneapolis. Afterwards, I made a pit stop at Flanigan’s on the way home to pick up some smoked fish dip for lunch.
Yesterday after a semi-busy work day and the handyman was done around the house, I went on another long walk, this time through my usual spots in Biscayne Park. As I was nearing home, I heard a call from a car passing by and to my surprise it was artist Kevin Arrow, who I’ve known since the my days volunteering at MOCA. Kevin’s work was on display at Bridge Red Studios the last time I was there.
Tonight, Vance and I will be celebrating Gina Margillo’s birthday at Magie in Little River. I met Gina, a local filmmaker and professor at Barry University, during an event at Barry and she hit it off immediately and have been chummy ever since. I actually wrote a profile on her for Biscayne Times, you can click here to read it.
On Saturday, after brunch at Threefold Cafe in Coral Gables with my friend Fernande and others from the gang of our Science Museum days, Vance, Nick and I are going to watch my great niece Kaitlyn and her Cranium Crash bandmates in action at the Miami Beach Youth Music Festival at the Miami Beach Bandshell.
Last week I meant to mention that the Adrienne Arsht Center’s 2026-2027 Season is out and it kicks off with none other than the “Buena Vista Social Club” which I can’t wait to see! Click on the link above to see the full schedule.
This week I got an e-mail with the lineup for this year’s Miami Film Festival which is happening April 9-19, click the link to see the full schedule. I try to always catch one or two movies during the run. If you’re a true movie buff they’ve got discount passes for a six movie bundle and even 12 movies!
And now it’s time to brag about my son Michael who is sous chef at Restoration Hardware’s restaurant in Charlotte. He sent us these photos of new menu items they’ve introduced there. It all looks fantastic and I can’t wait to visit him and dine there.
