Blog No. 42 of 2025
The weekend is upon us and so is the middle of October and glorious weather here in South Florida!
Here is a recap of what happened since I last hit your inbox last Friday…
Friday night Vance and I walked from our house just a few short blocks to the Village of Biscayne Park log cabin. There, we attended a lecture presented by the crotchety historian Dr. Seth Bramson who spoke about the history of Biscayne Park, Miami Shores and North Miami. Yes, I used the word crotchety because although his information was interesting, he truly rubbed me the wrong way with his negative comments and scolding of someone in the audience, which was a major turn off.
After walking back home, we drove over to Copperbridge Foundation, an arts and culture complex just about five minutes from our house, for the opening of the beautiful Brooms exhibition by Brazilian artist Monica Carvalho and a photography exhibition by Mexican artist David Gutierrez. Click here to see photos of the exhibition.
That night, I also met the people from Wayra Roots who make yuca arepas. Unfortunately, they’d run out that night but told me they’re always at Legion Park for the Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings.
Yuca arepa from Wayra Roots.
And you guessed it, on Saturday I went to the Urban Oasis Farmer’s Market and bought one of those unique yuca arepas stuffed with mushrooms. I also picked up some Indian food and lots of produce and herbs from Urban Oasis Project who not only run that market but sell locally sourced goods from local farmers. They have the best mushrooms I’ve ever had and their cilantro and strawberries (sold while in season of course) are wonderful too and because they’re locally sourced, they stay fresher much longer.
When I got home, Vance and I split the Indian food and arepa, both of which were delicious, and then went to the movies. We watched the latest film by Paul Thomas Anderson “One Battle After Another.” It was long, clocking in at 2:42, but very entertaining. A nail biter that was oddly comical, quirky and violent at times too.
Sunday what else would I be doing but watching the Miami Dolphins lose another home game, another heartbreaker. Right after the clock hit zero I went for a nice long walk to forget about what I’d just witnessed!
The remainder of the week up until today has been filled with numerous food rescue runs, a fun night at trivia with our neighbors Matt and Carlos and a few lengthy walks through Biscayne Park. I also popped into Dulce Tropical, a little Venezuelan restaurant, for a black bean and cheese empanada and passion fruit juice. I’m looking forward to grabbing a full meal there with Vance soon.
Tonight I’m going to dinner and a play with my sister Ana. We’re having dinner at Sushi Maki in Coral Gables and then walking over to Actors’ Playhouse on Miracle Mile to see “The Spitfire Grill.” Click here to read a review of the play which runs through Nov. 2.
And as I’ve been doing for a while now, here’s some suggestions on…
Things to Do:
Check out what’s going on at Factory Town, an event venue in Hialeah.
Tonight, take a walk through Little Havana during Viernes Culturales and listen to music, take a guided tour of the neighborhood and see colorful art.
All this weekend, Friday-Sunday attend the Miami Home Show at the Miami-Dade County Fair & Expo Center.
Hang out in Coral Gables this weekend and take a tour of the Merrick House, attend a free screening of Jurassic World: Rebirth at Cosford Cinema or take a bike tour of the city’s historic buildings by Architect Phineas Paist.
That’s all for this week and I leave you with a lovely sunset shot and video of the delicious food my son Michael the Sous Chef at Restoration Hardware’s restaurant made for the team breakfast this week, to take you into the weekend!
Oh and one last night, for fans of the yearly Miami Book Fair at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus, they have released this year’s Street Fair schedule. Click here to download the guide. The Street Fair is Nov. 21-23 and admission is always free on the first day.
